  • Love Never Fails

    I Corinthians 13:1-8 (NIV)

    adapted by J.A.C. Redford

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,

    but have not love,

I am only a resounding gong and a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,

And if I have a faith that can move mountains,

    but have not love,

    I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,

    but have not love,

    I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind,

    Love leaves envy far behind.

    Never boastful, proud or rude,

    Love rejoices with the truth.

Slow to anger, stores no wrongs,

Love will never seek its own.

Love does not delight in sin.

It bears all things, believes all things,

Love hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. Love never fails.

    Love never fails.

    Prophecies someday will cease.

As for tongues, they will be stilled.

    Knowledge, it will pass away,

Yet love remains, it hopes all things,

Believes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails. Love never fails.

    Love, love never fails.

  • Love Never Fails premiered at the wedding of Jeramy and Jerusha Redford Clark on 5 September 1997 at the First Evangelical Free Church of Fullerton, California. It was subsequently performed by members of the Redford family at the weddings of JAC's sons, Jonathan and Ian, and the celebration of daughter Jessica’s marriage.

Since it was first sung, Love Never Fails has been steadily performed year after year by solo vocalists and choruses alike. Erin Kishpaugh, accompanied by Michelle Hontz, performed the work during J.A.C. Redford’s 2004 residency at Marshall University, in partial fulfillment of her Master of Arts degree. Her thesis was entitled J.A.C. Redford’s A Psalm Triptych as Sonic Altarpiece. The Grammy Award-winning Kansas City Chorale under Charles Bruffy performed the SATB version of Love Never Fails in 2006 and the Westmont College Choir, directed by Michael Shasberger, performed it at Westmont’s 2009 Baccalaureate Service.

It has been recorded by Ian Redford, with Carolyn Litchfield and Howie Stevenson for Ms. Litchfield’s CD Wondrous Love, as well as Doris Fuqua for her CD Morning. The SA version was recorded in 2004 by the Bel Canto Women’s Choir of Azusa Pacific University, led by David Hughes, for its CD from One Generation to Another. The SATB version was recorded in 2006 by Los Angeles Chamber Singers, conducted by Peter Rutenberg, for the Clarion Records CD Evening Wind.

Both the SA and SATB arrangements of Love Never Fails are published by Fred Bock Music.
