The Trip to Bountiful: This critically acclaimed 1985 film stars Geraldine Page, John Heard, Carlin Glynn, Richard Bradford, and Rebecca De Mornay. Geraldine Page received an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. Horton Foote wrote the screenplay, which was based on his stage play. The film was directed by Peter Masterson and released by Island Pictures. The score, by J.A.C. Redford, features simple, folk-like melodies played on traditional musical instruments, such as the fiddle, tin whistle, harmonica, tack piano, and guitar, augmented by an orchestral string section. Highlights include a haunting rendition of the classic Christian hymn "Softly and Tenderly," sung by Cynthia Clawson.
